Sinn Féin Councillor Declan McAleer has welcomed the party's 'Text to Join' initiative. Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams launched the scheme which Sinn Féin say makes the party more accessible to more people.

Councillor McAleer said

''Currently people can phone, 'walk in' or email to apply to join Sinn Féin. The email system in recent times has been the most successful.

''We recognise that almost everyone has a mobile phone so why not 'Text to Join'.

''The party has set up a 5 digit number and from now on people can text 'JOIN' followed by their name and address to 60060 and apply to 'Join by Text'.

''We believe that this recent development will bring more people to Sinn Féin. We are changing with the times and exploring more avenues to build support and build activism for Irish republican ideals.
