Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Declan Mc Aleer has welcomed the Irish governments demand for special status for the North.

The West Tyrone Assembly member said "We are a small island with a highly integrated agri-food sector that relies heavily on north-south trade in live animals and other agriculture products.
"In 2015, the agri-trade figure between north and south was 1.3 billion euros. This relates to the trade of live animals as well as other products, including food, drink, forestry and animal by-products.
"This level of trade is underpinned by the all-Island animal health and welfare strategy which has fostered a high level of co-operation across Ireland in the area of animal health and welfare.
"Brexit would literally drive a horse and carriage through vital cross border trade and compromise the all-Island animal health and welfare strategy. On top of this, Brexit would remove the Single Farm Payment which is 87% of farmer's income, remove the Pillar 2 support and unquestionably cripple the industry.
"Therefore, the announcement that the Irish government supports the call for special status for the north is very welcome as it is in the best interests of the industry and rural communities across the country".
