McMahon pressing Transport NI on Strabane town weed spraying and verge cutting programme.
Published: 8 June, 2016
Strabane Sinn Féin Councillor Brian Mc Mahon has been pressing Transport NI (formally DRD Roads Service) of the urgent need to initiate it's 'Weed Spraying Programme' in Strabane to tackle the rampant weed and grass growth on road verges and footpaths throughout the area for which the body is responsible for maintaining
"I have raised this issue both in Council and directly with the local Transport NI Section Office.
"I asked Council to formally write to the new Transport Minister Chris Hazard calling for urgent action to be taken to address this issue-which is always an annual problem in this and other areas at this time each year. Michaela Boyle MLA has also submitted a question to the Minister seeking assurance that the necessary funding is in place to roll out a full spraying and verge cutting programme throughout the Strabane area.
"I have also been speaking to local Roads Section Officer Sam Young pressing for action to be taken. He advised that the contractor for the Weed Spraying Programme should be appointed within a fortnight and that spraying of affected areas will commence.
"The Housing Executive is responsible for the maintenance of other paths and laneways and in liaising with them I have been assured that its Programme is already underway and on schedule.
"Council maintains areas for which it is responsible for on an ongoing basis and I will be continuing to liaise with all the relevant agencies to try and ensure that the unsightly problem is more pro-actively tackled.
