Councillor Ruairi Mc Hugh welcomes addition of Castlederg to Angling Fair venues

Derg Sinn Féin Councillor Ruairí Mc Hugh has welcomed the decision to include Castlederg as a host venue for Council's Fly Fair and Angling show. The matter was discussed at a recent meeting of the Business and Culture committee with Strabane, Newtownstewart and Sion Mills being originally proposed by officers to host the two day event on an annual rotational basis. Speaking following the meeting Councillor Mc Hugh said '' I would firstly like to welcome the £15000 support package being put in place to fund the Angling Fair being hosted in Strabane this year, however, I was somewhat surprised and disappointed that Castlederg had not been included as a proposed host venue. The Derg river is a great asset on our doorstep and is famous far and wide for its stocks of salmon and trout. The Derg would be a great addition to the already proposed venues to host an event of this nature. '' We have Council sites on the banks of the River Derg at both the Castle site and Mitchell Park which would be ideal venues to host this two day event. Castlederg has a growing reputation for our excellent restaurants, cafes as well as our highly rated accommodation provision all of which would benefit from the hundreds of visitors to this type of event, which is why I am happy that Council officers have now agreed to my request that Castlederg also be included as a host venue.'' The Angling fair is set to be hosted on the River Mourne in Strabane this year on Sat 7th and Sun 8th May. The Fair will include competitions for all ages, fly fair talks, fly casting demonstrations / instructions, youth angling workshop, angling show exhibition & trade fair and cooking demonstrations.
