Nurses deserve proper wage increase
Published: 23 September, 2015
Sinn Féin representative Grace McDermott has said nurses across the North deserve the pay increase which was awarded to their colleagues in Britain.
Ms McDermott said,
"Nurses provide an invaluable service and deserve a fair wage for their work. Holding back a pay increase which was awarded to their colleagues in Britain is unfair.
"Due to the Tory austerity measures nurses and other members of the public service have seen their wages frozen or limited to below inflation increases over the past few years. This has in fact meant a decrease of up to 20% in real terms in wages.
"This is forcing many nurses out of the profession or making nurses move to other countries in order to seek employment with a living wage.
"Sinn Féin will be supporting the campaign by the Royal College of Nursing to see the increase awarded to nurses in Britain implemented in the North so that nurses get a fair wage and working conditions to deliver a much-needed service.
"The Health Minister Simon Hamilton should return to his post urgently so these matters can be dealt with as soon as possible."
