Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Disability and West Tyrone MLA Michaela Boyle has this week praised the work of the 214,000 carer's throughout the north who are supporting a loved one who is older, disabled or seriously ill.

Speaking after the launch of Carer's week in Stormont Ms Boyle said,

"214,000 people throughout the 6 counties are currently making a remarkable contribution to our society, holding families together and enabling loved ones to get the most out of life. Their caring services are currently saving the local economy £4.4billion a year.

"Many carer's are struggling to cope, and feel that the current system simply does not provide the financial, emotional or physical support they need, with many carer's also suffering ill-health, poverty and isolation.

"It is important that we as MLA's speak up on their behalf and ensure they receive the support which they deserve.

"The work of a carer should not be taken lightly. It requires patience, understanding and commitment but the passion and enthusiasm in which carers report their experiences is deeply humbling.

"I have the utmost respect and admiration for both the carers and those in receipt of care. They are making such a difference to so many lives and cannot be commended enough."
