West Tyrone Sinn Fein MP Pat Doherty has welcomed the recent announcement by Martin Mc Guinness of a Ministerial taskforce to focus on redressing the economic disparities in the North West Region.
The local MP said,
"I welcome this initiative by Martin McGuinness in targeting the regional disparities affecting the North West as an area requiring a policy priority position across all departments.
"3 out of 4 council areas with the highest levels of unemployment are in the North West.
"Our economic misfortune isn't just a consequence of the current economic recession. These economic disparities are the out-workings of decades of discrimination and systemic underinvestment by previous regimes and British Direct Rule Ministers.
"Sinn Féin believes that if we are to change the outcomes we must become a more resilient and more self-reliant economy while creating the environment to attract inward investment.
"Sinn Féin has challenged Invest NI arguing that it must promote the Strabane district and entire Northwest more robustly.
"Our combined focus must be upon strengthening manufacturing, promoting innovation and encouraging international trade and development and it is vital that we boost our infrastructure and transport networks by progressing projects such as the A5 road.
"I welcome the focus that has been put on the North West and the economic needs of the area- it is only through proactive working, that we can successfully rebuild our local economy."
