Outrage at arson attack at home of Strabane Sinn Féin Councillor‏

Published: 10 December, 2014

Sinn Féin MLA Michaela Boyle has strongly condemned an arson attack at the home of her party colleague Strabane Sinn Féin councillor Jay McCauley.

2 vehicles parked outside Councillor McCauley's home were set alight late last night.

Speaking this morning Ms Boyle said,

"The community of Strabane are outraged at this attack. Many local people have been in contact with Jay and our office this morning expressing their anger. Jay has been a hard working councillor for a number of years and has been extremely diligent in representing his constituents. It says much about the mentality of the criminals behind this threat that they would target Jay's family home while he and his wife and children were asleep. It shows the cowardly nature of the attack.

"For too long now criminal elements in Strabane have been involved in threatening and intimidating local people. This hasn't been the first arson attack in recent months. Jay has spoken out strongly against this campaign of intimidation. This will not stop Cllr McCauley working for the people of this area. The actions of these criminals contrast sharply with the positive work of Cllr McCauley in Strabane.

"These criminals seem to think they can do what they want, that they can control, bully and intimidate our community - they are very badly mistaken. Sinn Féin will stand shoulder to shoulder with Jay and face these criminals down."
