Clonoe to host Tyrone Volunteers Day 2014

Published: 16 October, 2014

The Tyrone Sinn Féin Commemoration Committee has this week unveiled plans for Tyrone Volunteers Day 2014, which will take place on Friday 24th October in Clonoe. The annual day of commemoration remembers the 56 Volunteers of the IRA's Tyrone Brigade and 3 Sinn Féin activists who lost their lives during the conflict. Traditionally held on the anniversary of Tyrone Hunger Striker Martin Hurson on 13th July over the past number of years, the format has since changed and now sees it rotated around the county on different dates. This year the Coalisland and Clonoe Sinn Féin Cumann, in partnership with the Tyrone Commemoration Committee, have organised Tyrone Volunteers Day.

Plans include a public talk and discussion on 'A strategy for Irish Freedom' involving Sinn Féin Vice President and Dublin T.D. Mary Lou McDonald as well as Tyrone MPs Michelle Gildernew and Francie Molloy. This will take place on Friday 24th October in Clonoe Community Centre with a 7:30pm starting time. Also listed is a 40th Anniversary commemoration for Volunteer Hugh Coney on Thursday 6th November in Clonoe Graveyard at 7:30pm.

Speaking earlier this week, Mr Stan Corrigan, spokesperson for the Tyrone Sinn Féin Commemoration Committee said:

"Tyrone has paid a heavy cost in the recent struggle for Irish freedom. 56 Volunteers of Tyrone Brigade Óglaigh na hÉireann and three Sinn Féin activists were killed throughout the years of the most recent conflict. Tyrone Volunteers Day is a day when we remember all of them with pride and rededicate ourselves to the struggle for which they died; Irish reunification and independence. To the families of our patriot dead in Tyrone we extend our on-going support, solidarity and sympathy.

"Tyrone is a very proud county. Proud of the men and women who were to the forefront of the struggle for Irish Freedom, and proud of those who gave their lives for the cause. Whilst the struggle can now be advanced through peaceful and democratic means, none of it would have been possible without the struggle over recent years.

"We would ask people to support the local events organised in the Clonoe area on Friday 24th October for Tyrone Volunteers Day and to also support the commemoration for Volunteer Hugh Coney on Thursday 6th November.
