Sinn Féin calls for the suspension of Omagh PSNI Officers
Published: 20 March, 2014
West Tyrone MLA Declan Mc Aleer has called for the immediate suspension of two PSNI officers involved in a recent court case.
According to Mr Mc Aleer "The evidence given by these two officers against two local youths was described by the judge as 'tainted'.
"The case taken against the two Greencastle lads was dismissed after CCTV footage proved beyond doubt that they were not involved in wrongdoing.
"I am deeply concerned that only for the presence of CCTV these lads may have found it difficult to prove their innocence.
"While I appreciate that this investigation is ongoing I am calling for the PSNI to take immediate action and suspend these two officers.
"I contacted the District Commander's office on Monday requesting a meeting to discuss this matter, and I have also raised my concerns with my party colleague, Gerry Kelly MLA who sits on the Policing Board.
According to Mr Kelly
"While the Ombudsman is the main route to deal with complaints against PSNI members, it is essential that the PSNI themselves take responsibility for the conduct and behaviour of its members.
"The fact that an Ombudsman investigation is ongoing should not prohibit the PSNI from acting promptly in instances of misconduct or indiscipline."
