Sinn Féin Councillors confident on progression of A5 after Stormont meeting with DRD Minister Danny Kennedy.

Local Sinn Féin Councillors Ruairí Mc Hugh and Kieran Mc Guire have described as 'positive and re-assuring' the meeting they attended as part of a delegation with Mr. Danny Kennedy, Minister of the Department for Regional Development last Monday February 24. The meeting focused primarily on the delayed A5 Western Transport Corridor Project.

Speaking following the meeting Chairman of Strabane District Council who led the delegation, Councillor Ruairí Mc Hugh said that,

'The purpose of this meeting was to be proactive in ensuring that A5 Western Transport Corridor Project is progressing and that the associated investment will be secured for the west. This project is of vital importance to the North West and indeed the wider Derg area and will provide greater access to essential services such as hospitals, improve road safety, encourage inward investment and act as a catalyst for the social and economic regeneration of the district. Strabane District Council remains committed to working with central government to enhancing the connectivity of this district and to the utilisation of this significant investment in the Strabane District'.

Also Commenting on the meeting Councillor Mc Guire said

'At the meeting the Minister re-affirmed his commitment to the Western Transport Corridor Project. He indicated that a number of reports had been commissioned by his Department. The last of these reports are on schedule for completion by the Autumn. He also indicated that the Irish Government have continued to maintain their financial commitment to the project. Consultations in relation to the project will also commence in the coming months''
