Mc Guire Welcomes progress on Abercorn Bridge Newtownstewart
Published: 12 January, 2014
Sinn Fein Councillor Kieran Mc Guire has welcomed the news that the much needed works to the Abercorn Bridge in Newtownstewart has gone out to tender
Cllr Mc Guire said " this is very welcome news for the people of Newtownstewart, for the last number of years the Abercorn bridge had been deemed unsafe for heavy vehicles which meant one lane had been closed, this has been causing an inconvenience to the local businesses of the town and is also causing a great risk to motorists especially on mart days when vehicles can back up on to the notorious A5 road which is a serious accident waiting to happen. There has also been a lack of traffic controls at the bridge where people exiting from Vaughans Holm where the mart, GAA ground, rugby, soccer, civic amenity site, Presbyterian hall and canoe facilities are located, are dangerously blinded to their left by the barriers on the bridge.
The proposed works consist of design & construction of a new Viaduct, Pier Beam, Reinforcing works, Carriageway Waterproofing and Resurfacing, the Tender process is now open and all Tenders must be returned by 3pm February 4th 2014.
Sinn Fein has been lobbying for this work for a long time and are now glad to see that progress is being made which will alleviate the difficulties motorist have been experiencing accessing the Abercorn Bridge
