Boyle welcomes news that £73m North Wing Project at Altnagelvin Hospital is to Proceed

Sinn Féin MLA Michaela Boyle has welcomed confirmation from the Western Health and Social Care Trust that the Department of Health has approved the business case and funding to progress the design and construction of a new 'North Wing' building at Altnagelvin Hospital. The total cost of the project is projected to be £73m.

Ms Boyle said, "This is great news for patients and staff in the hospital. The development will benefit people living within the Strabane district and it will complement and be constructed in parallel with the new £50m cross border Radiotherapy Unit which is due to open in mid-2016.

As the largest acute hospital outside Belfast, supporting the second highest concentration of population in the north, this project is of significant strategic importance and will contribute to safe and effective delivery of patient care across the network of acute hospitals.

Not only is this good news from a health perspective, it will also provide a welcome boost to the economy and the construction sector, who are under extreme pressure at this time.

The new building will incorporate six inpatient ward areas, a new main entrance to the hospital and relocation of car parking facilities. The building will be designed in a way that ensures patients receive their care and treatment in a modern clinical and therapeutic environment, compliant with emerging statutory and regulatory standards.

Design and construction of the new building is expected to be completed by the end of March 2017. Services will remain fully operational during the construction period".
