Few convinced over Villier's Omagh Bomb Inquiry refusal-Doherty

West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty says that few are convinced by British Secretary of State Teresa Villiers citing 'insufficient grounds for further inquiry' as the real reason behind the British government's refusal to hold a public inquiry into the Omagh bomb. The Sinn Féin MP said,

"Few will be convinced by this line of explanation. The tireless campaign by some of the families to secure a cross-border public inquiry into the Omagh bomb is all about getting full disclosure about what happened at that time given that there are still so many unanswered questions.

"Most believe that the British government's real motivation in refusing this public inquiry is not only to do with narrow financial considerations but possibly due to fears about what may come to light.

"The timing of the British government's announced decision, on the eve of the Haas talks, is also a signal of its desire to 'kick the can down the road' and have the cross-border inquiry demand placed within context of the overall victims' issue which forms a key element of these talks.

"Sinn Féin will continue to support the Omagh families in their demand to secure a full cross-border public inquiry.
