Apply for School Uniform Grant Call

Published: 2 August, 2013

Sinn Féin Mid Tyrone Councillor and Chairperson of Omagh District Council Anne Marie Fitzgerald has called upon local parents to apply now for School Uniform grants. She furthermore called on those who are entitled to Free School Meals to also apply for these in time for the commencement of the new school year in September.

The Clothing Allowance Scheme covers pupils in primary, post-primary and special schools. The eligibility criteria are similar to those used for free school meals. Parents can obtain further information, check eligibility criteria and apply through their local Education and Library Board.

Speaking on the issue Councillor Fitzgerald said:

"I would call upon local families to apply for the School Uniform grant being made available through the Department of Education. For many families the cost of school uniforms at this time of the year is a huge financial burden, this fund is there to ease this burden by assisting families with the costs of school uniforms. Given the economic hardships it is a welcome assistance and has proved to be popular in previous years, with approximately £4.3million given per annum to this scheme, benefiting around 75,000 pupils.

"This scheme helps many families on benefits and low income households. The eligibility criteria for clothing allowances are similar to those used for free school meals and at this time I would also urge people to apply for free school meals for their children who may be returning or even starting education in the new school term.

"Parents can check their eligibility through the local Education and Library Board who will be able to provide additional information and advice as well as an application form. Alternatively additional information is available at http://www.nidirect.gov.uk.

"I would encourage anyone who is entitled to these valuable allowances to apply now to ensure they benefit in time for a return to term time in September.
