Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer said former Ulster Unionist Ken Maginnis confirmed on the RTÉ programme last night 'Thatcher - Ireland and the Iron Lady' that there was a shoot-to-kill policy sanctioned by the highest level of the British Government. The West Tyrone MLA said: "In the programme Ken Maginnis states that he met Margaret Thatcher after the IRA had killed eight British soldiers and she asked him who was responsible. "The former UDR major gave the British prime minister names of people who he suspected were involved and days later those he named, IRA volunteers Gerard and Martin Harte and Brian Mullin, were ambushed by the SAS. "This admittance, straight from the horse's mouth, clearly shows that the British government, with the collaboration of the Ulster Unionist party, were responsible for targeting and executing people. "It confirms what republicans have been saying for years, that those at the highest levels of the British government were involved in targeting and assassinating republicans, solicitors and anyone else who challenged their remit in Ireland."
