West Tyrone Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Community Fund for Carrickmore, Sixmilecross and Beragh

Published: 3 May, 2013

Mid Tyrone Sinn Féin Councillor Anne Marie Fitzgerald has welcomed the establishment of a community fund totalling £18,000 per year for community groups in the Carrickmore, Sixmilecross and Beragh areas. The fund comes from the developers of the Crockagarran windfarm on the Whitebridge road, outside Carrickmore.

According to Councillor Fitzgerald:

"The community fund has been in the pipeline for some time; Sinn Fein have endeavoured to ensure local communities benefit from areas where these wind farms are present. ESB had made this commitment and a number of outstanding issues have now been addressed, allowing the community fund to be progressed. Similarly my council colleague Frankie Donnelly was involved in a similar community fund being established for Fintona last year. In terms of this fund, it amounts to £18,000 per year with £36,000 being delivered before the end of this year given that the wind-farm in questions has been in operation a year already.

"I had previously been in contact with the developers behind the wind farm regarding the interference with TV Aerials and was able to reach a satisfactory conclusion whereby the company supplied affected properties with digiboxes. Following on from that the group had said they were progressing the issue of the community fund and it is welcome that confirmation was received this week that the fund will be advertised in the coming weeks.

"Whilst wind turbines are not favoured by everyone, we have tried to ensure where they do currently exist that there is some benefit to the local community. Certainly that is the rationale behind our support for the establishment of the current community fund.
