Begley welcomes extension of small business rates relief scheme.

Sinn Féin Councillor Sean Begley is hopeful the sustainability of many small local businesses will be helped with the extension of the Small Business Rates Relief Scheme in April.

He said, "Last year was the first year of the Small Business Rates Relief Scheme with properties with a Net Annual value of up to £10, 000 qualifying for a 20% reduction on their rates. This measure undoubtedly saved many small businesses which would otherwise gone under with jobs lost.

"While many of the smaller businesses benefited from this scheme, many other local businesses who have been equally struggling to stay afloat fell just outside the eligibility criteria.

"Sinn Féin lobbied strongly to have the initial Rates Relief Scheme introduced and within the Executive has been fully behind efforts to extend the scheme to provide relief a wider layer of under pressure businesses.

"So I very much welcome that in April the scheme is to be extended to provide a 20% rates reduction to properties with a Net Value of between £5,001 and £15,000 with all businesses in the category automatically qualifying for the rates reduction.

"This measure will benefit an additional 3,500 businesses across the north and undoubtedly a large number of local businesses will be able to avail of this much needed assistance.
