Published: 1 January, 2013

West Tyrone MLA Declan Mc Aleer has expressed sympathy with the family of the young man from Monaghan who lost his life following an assault in Omagh.

Jason Mc Govern and a friend were making their way along Kevlin Road when they were assaulted by a group of people. He then went back to a friend's house in Emyvale and tragically, was found dead yesterday morning.

'I spoke at length to my colleague Cllr Brian Mc Kenna who knows the deceased and his family very well. He said that Jason, who was the youngest of 3 boys, was a very pleasant young man and had been attending Sligo IT College. He said that his death has sent shockwaves around the close knit rural community of north Monaghan where the Mc Govern family are well known and highly respected.

'Whilst the postmortem will establish the exact cause of Jason's death, I am very disturbed that he was the victim of such an attack in Omagh and I am also very concerned about the increasing level of drink fuelled crime in our community.

Mr Mc Aleer concluded 'This is devestating news for the Mc Govern family. The loss of a loved one is terrible at any time of the year but made more poignant as it coincides with the beginning of the new year.

'The people of Omagh and from throughout West Tyrone are disgusted by what has happened and on their behalf I wish to convey heartfelt sympathy to the Mc Govern family at this difficult time'.
