West Tyrone Sinn Féin Councillor Glenn Campbell has welcomed road improvements at the junction of Edergoole and Loughmuck Roads, but has called for greater improvements on these and other roads that approach Fintona.

The Edergoole/Loughmuck Roads junction frequently floods leading to treacherous driving conditions for motorists. According to Councillor Campbell, recent road works may reduce the danger to cars approaching the junction, but questions remain as to whether the work will fully address the flooding issue.

Councillor Campbell said,

"The road resurfacing work undertaken by DRD Roads Service at this junction is to be welcomed. The higher road surface should lead to less surface water and hence reduce the danger to cars. However, local residents have questioned if the recent works will reduce the risk of flooding."

"Local people maintain that, when the junction floods, it is like a river flowing over the road and they fear that this will continue to be the case. There is also the view that the road resurfacing should have been continued along the Edergoole and Loughmuck Roads, which frequently fall victim to dangerous floods."

Councillor Campbell has called on DRD Roads Service to give greater attention to both roads and has claimed that several other roads that approach Fintona from Omagh and Clanabogan are in a dire condition.

"In my communications woth DRD Roads Service, I will be highlighting the condition of both the Edergoole and Loughmuck roads. I will also be highlighting the state of the Dunnamona road approaching Fintona from Clanabogan and the Tattyreagh Road which are also heavily used to motorists travelling towards the town."

Councillor Campbell continued,

"I recently travelled the Loughmuck Road from Omagh and noticed a sizable amount of hazardous surface water for a moderate amount of rain. An inspection of all four leads to a common conclusion; all are heavily used by motorists travelling towards Fintona, all are in a state of disrepair and all have fallen victim to flooding on several occasions during recent months. Concluding, Councillor Campbell said, "I am calling on DRD Roads Service to give due attention to the four roads and bring forward a work plan for their improvement."
