Cllr Mc Mahon said that as well as Strabane the meeting held in Derry included the Chairs/ Mayors of Councils from Monaghan, Omagh, Derry, Letterkenny and Donegal, and was convened to ensure a unified lobby voice on the issue.

He said,

"The meeting was convened to establish a united lobby voice demanding the A5 goes ahead and to agree a plan of actions to ensure this issue remains top of the political agenda. A delegation from the group is meeting Martin Mc Guinness later today and other meetings are being requested with Peter Robinson, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the respective Transport Ministers north and south.

"We need absolute certainty restored to the A5 project and both administrations, but particularly the Southern Government need to reaffirm their financial commitments over a newly agreed timeframe and it goes without saying that we are seeking to ensure the contributions from the Assembly Executive be firmly retained.

"All 3 route sections must commence the construction phase in Sept 2012 as previously agreed with new completion dates also agreed.

"Piecemeal implementation or vague commitments are unacceptable."
