West Tyrone Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Urgent investigation call following flooding.

Published: 8 November, 2011

Mid Tyrone Sinn Féin councillor Anne Marie Fitzgerald has called for an urgent investigation by Planning Service following serious flooding to a local family's street after a pool at a local sand pit burst its banks. The flooding which happened on Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday morning should now be the subject of an investigation according to Councillor Fitzgerald.

According to local Councillor Ann Marie Fitzgerald "I was at the scene with the Mc Kiernan family until 2am on Sunday morning and share their sense of despair. No doubt they will have a huge financial bill as the cost of repairing their home is counted.

"In addition to the Mc Kiernan family home being affected, there will be wider environmental impacts. A lot of the sediment from the burst pool made its way to a tributary which feeds into the Camowen river which, along with the Strule, is well known as a habitat for salmon and other aquaculture.

"I spoke to representatives of Rivers and Loughs Agency on-site and have written to Planning Headquarters requesting that they urgently investigate this crisis and explain how it could have possibly happened. We need answers and we need to know what mitigating measures will be put in place so that such an event will never re-occur in future".
