Mc Guire welcomes temporary extension for slurry spreading‏

Councillor Mc Guire said:
"Given the prolonged period of heavy rainfall many farmers have been unable to meet the October 15 deadline for spreading slurry under the Nitrates Action Programme Regulations.
"The decision to put in place temporary flexibility enabling slurry to be spread up until 31st October is a very welcome one and many farmers will be relieved at this initiative by Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill to extend the normal deadline.
"This will hopefully give farmers an opportunity to spread slurry when conditions are better and this will protect our environment. Most farmers are aware of the need to prevent water pollution and work very hard to do so; slurry should only be spread when soil and weather conditions are suitable, such conditions have not existed recently."
