West Tyrone Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Balanced approach needed for BBC broadcasting

Published: 12 July, 2011

Sinn Fein mid Tyrone councillor Sean Clarke has said the BBC should be more balanced in its coverage of commemoration events in the north. He said he was contacted by a number of irate constituents who were angry about the coverage dedicated to the twelfth of July demonstrations on Tuesday. It was the subject of an hour long documentary on Tuesday morning followed by a supplementary half hour documentary that night. Speaking on the issue councillor Clarke said: 'The BBC need to be more reflective of society in the north of ireland. In the interest of equality if the BBC are adamant that the twelfth of July is given air time on TV then naturally they should dedicate a similar TV programme about commemorations for the 1916 Easter Rising at Easter time. This hasn't been the case. 'I have been contacted by a number of irate customers who pay their TV licence fee and feel short changed when they see programmes like this aired. The BBC need to wake and smell the coffee. They need to come into the 21st century and ensure there is equality in broadcasting.
