Published: 19 August, 2010

West Tyrone Sinn Féin Councillor Glenn Campbell, has urged students who have received their A-Level results to consider all options available and urged those finding it difficult to decide on their next step to avail of the support available. Welcoming the fact that 98.1% of Students in the North achieved grades A-E, Cllr Campbell said,
"For many young people this is a pivotal time in determining their future path towards Higher Education and employment. Record numbers of students have achieved excellent results and are to be commented today on their success. Others will have not achieved all the grades they were hoping for, but their effort and achievement is equally commendable."
Commenting on the shortage of University places, Cllr Campbell said,
"I am conscious that students who have achieved their desired grades, and those who have not, may have difficulty securing a University place. I would urge students not to panic and to avail of all the support that is available through Careers Advisors at their school, Further Education College, or through the Careers Service at the Department for Employment and Learning."
Urging students to consider all options available, before making a decision, Cllr Campbell said,
"There will be other options available to students, and many may find a suitable course closer to home at their local Regional College, which offer a wide range of Foundation Degrees which are stand-alone qualifications but also enable progression to Honours Degree study at the University of Ulster and QUB."
Cllr Campbell, who lectures in Engineering, said the uptake in STEM Subjects this year was particularly welcome,
"I am pleased to see a high uptake in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects. These STEM subjects are classified as Priority Skills Areas and it is widely predicted that skills shortages in these areas will continue to grow and students graduating with qualifications in a STEM area will continue to be in demand."
Concluding, Cllr Campbell said,
"The excellent results this year also highlight the dedication and support of teachers and parents who constantly encourage our young people to achieve their full potential. They too should be celebrating today."
