The Chairperson of Omagh District Council, Declan Mc Aleer and Mid Tyrone Cllr, Sean Clarke were among several hundred participants who took part in this years 'Cairn Sunday'. Participants take the challenge of climbing almost 3 miles through rugged terrain to the summit of Mullaghcarn, which is part of the Sperrin Mountain range.

Speaking after reaching the summit, Cllr Mc Aleer said:

"I was one of the participants who took the 'scenic route' through the bog from Lenagh Road. However, despite sore feet, the sense of achievement upon reaching the summit was overwhelming, while the music and refreshments provided welcome relief to the weary climbers.

Cllr Clarke added "This is a very spiritual and inclusive annual event with people from every section of our community taking part. It has become an annual pilgrimage for many people who take the opportunity to meet acquaintances that they have not seen from one year to the next.

In conclusion, both Councillors said, "We would like take the opportunity to thank and congratulate the 4 community associations - the Glens, Owenkillew, Rouskey and Mountfield for organising this event and we are already looking forward to next years challenge".
