The chairperson of Omagh District Council, Declan Mc Aleer has called for the introduction of an additional bin collection service to cope with the proliferation of cardboard which is generated by local businesses in the town.

According to Cllr Mc Aleer

"I have been contacted by a number of town traders expressing frustration over the huge weekly build up of cardboard and packaging generated by their businesses.

"Traders do not have any choice in relation to the quantity of wrapping and packaging used by manufacturers of products, but they are responsible for the disposal of such material.

"Most of this material is bulky and uses up vast quantities of already limited floor space. Unfortunately, in most cases the quantity of material generated greatly exceeds bin capacity, and this causes frustration among the traders.

Cllr Mc Aleer concluded "I have brought the request for an additional collection service to the attention of the head of Technical services. In addition to this, I plan to raise the matter at the monthly Environmental Services Committee meeting on Wednesday evening and am hopeful that a satisfactory resolution can be reached".
