Dromore Barracks Demolished

Published: 9 July, 2010

Sinn Féin councillor for West Tyrone, Ann Quinn has welcomed the demolition of the former RUC and PSNI barracks in Dromore. The Barracks has been closed for a number of years but has remained in situ until this week. Work commenced on removing the barracks, which was sold at a public auction last year.

Councillor Quinn has said she was glad to see the barracks being removed describing it as an 'intrusive eyesore'. Speaking she said:

"This week has seen the demolition of the former RUC and later the PSNI barracks in Dromore. This must be welcomed. Ever since its erection it has been an intrusive eyesore for the people of Dromore. It has been a blot on the landscape of Dromore and was unwanted and opposed by many in the local community.

"Sinn Féin has consistently called for the Dromore Barracks to be closed, which was successfully secured within the past number of years. Through many years of campaigning, protesting and direct negotiations by Sinn Fein and our youth wing, Ógra Shinn Fein we succeeded in getting the barracks demilitarized. I am pleased to see his process being completed this week; it is something which will free up the land for development.

"It would be my hope that this site will now be utilized for the benefit of the local community and that the current owner's of the site factor the feelings of local people into their future development plans for the site.
