The Tyrone Commemoration Committee has this week announced their intention to roll out a robust programme of events to mark the 94th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

According to the group's Chairperson Sean Begley "We have a very energetic and enthusiastic committee made up of representatives from throughout County Tyrone. Last year, we organised the National Hunger strike commemoration in Galbally which was attended by over 10,000 people.

"The success of this mobilisation has created added determination to make the 94th anniversary of the Easter Rising a fitting tribute to those who have laid down their lives in the struggle for Irish freedom.

Councillor Begley added "One of the novel ideas discussed is to incorporate street theatre into the county commemoration at Carrickmore. Already, we have a team of enthusiastic volunteers working on the choreography and precise detail of the historical events that took place at the GPO, Dublin on Easter Monday 1916.

"These activists have already remarked on how the façade, particularly the pillars, of the Patrician Hall on Carrickmore's main street bear a striking resemblance to the frontage of the GPO on O Connell Street.

"A re enactment of this historic event would not only provide good theatre, but would be extremely educational, as well as being a fitting way to remember those who have died.

"Whilst the precise timing and details are still to be finalised, it is envisaged that this historical re enactment will take place around 2pm and act as a precursor to the main County parade which I am certain will be a huge success this year".
