Sinn Féin welcome decision on Long Kesh listed buildings

Sinn Féin Mid Tyrone Councillor Sean Clarke has welcomed the decision to retain the listed building status of Long Kesh. Edwin Poots revealed that there will be no change to the listed buildings status to some structures in the Long Kesh site.

His predecessor Sammy Wilson had asked his officials to consider whether he could revoke such status.

Councilor Clarke said:

"This review, which was initiated by Sammy Wilson, was merely a publicity seeking opportunity by unionists. It should not have taken place. It has been a waste of official's time and taxpayer's money. At the end of this review the Environment Agency review has concluded the listed buildings on the site merit protection.

"I welcome this decision by the Environment agency. The fact is that one of the most significant and momentous events took place at this site in 1981 when ten Irish republicans died on Hunger Strike. The jail represents an important part of Irish history and as such these buildings of historical importance deserve to be protected.

"Our view has been supported by the recent review given that the Environment Agency reviewed the listings on the site, re-evaluating the special architectural and historic interest against the standard listing criteria, and concluded that no buildings should be de-listed.
