Fitzgerald Condemns Carrickmore RobberiesPublished: 17 February, 2009
Mid Tyrone Sinn Féin Councillor Anne Marie Fitzgerald has urged people in the Carrickmore area to be vigilant and look out for vulnerable neighbours. Her call follows a number of robberies in the Carrickmore area. The latest spate of robberies in the area took place over the weekend.
Two properties in the area were targeted. One of the properties targeted was broken into when no one was at home. At the second property at least 2 men of a gang of 5 entered a house ransacking it before leaving in a red Honda car. It is understood a man engaged the householder in conversation in a yard outside the house whilst the two men ransacked the house. Whilst inside the house one of the men distracted a woman in the house who was oblivious that a robbery was ongoing. It was only after the men had left the scene that the householder realised he had been the victim of a robbery when he discovered a sum of cash had been missing.
Commenting on the robberies local Sinn Féin councillor for the area Anne Marie Fitzgerald said:
"It is despicable that these robberies are targeting vulnerable members of the community. I think I speak for the whole community in my condemnation of these robberies.
"Having spoken to a number of families affected by these robberies it is clear that it has been a terrifying experience. Targeting people in the one place they feel safe, their own homes is not only worrying but sinister.
"I would urge members of the local area in Carrickmore to be vigilant. I would also urge people to look out for vulnerable neighbours. |
